Recreational Vehicle Insurance — For the Toys You Love

From a family motorhome to a side-by-side on a hunting lease, recreational vehicles need specialty coverage that off-the-shelf auto policies don't provide. NGME shops carriers built for the way these vehicles are actually used.

What we insure

We write coverage across the full recreational landscape:

  • ATVs and side-by-sides (UTVs) — on-trail, on-property, hunting and ranch use.
  • Snowmobiles — including out-of-state trail use.
  • Motorhomes (Class A, B, C) — full-time and part-time RV use.
  • Travel trailers and 5th wheels — towed RVs with their own coverage requirements.
  • Pop-up campers and teardrop trailers — lightweight and entry-level RVs.
  • Utility trailers — flatbeds, enclosed cargo, livestock, dump trailers.
  • Dirt bikes and dual-sport motorcycles — see motorcycle insurance.

Coverages designed for recreational use

  • Comprehensive and collision — covers the vehicle itself against accidents, theft, and weather.
  • Liability — protects you against injury or property damage you cause to others while operating.
  • Personal effects coverage — protects belongings inside an RV or trailer (clothing, electronics, sporting equipment).
  • Vacation liability — protects you while parked at a campground or storage location.
  • Total loss replacement — replaces a totaled motorhome or trailer with a comparable new unit for a defined period.
  • Roadside assistance and emergency expense — towing, hotel, meals, and transportation if you're stranded.
  • Full-timer coverage — extends home-style liability and personal property limits for clients living full-time in an RV.

Common claims we see

  • Side-by-side rollovers on uneven terrain
  • RV awning damage from sudden storms
  • Travel trailer theft from storage lots
  • Motorhome collision while towing a vehicle
  • Snowmobile damage during off-trail use

Most can be prevented with proper storage and operating practices, but when they happen, the right policy resolves them quickly.

Seasonal vs. year-round coverage

Many recreational vehicles only see a few months of use per year. Some carriers offer reduced "in-storage" rates that maintain comprehensive coverage (theft, fire, weather) during off-season months at significantly lower premium. We model both year-round and lay-up rates and recommend the most cost-effective structure.

Frequently asked questions

Does my auto policy cover my ATV or side-by-side?

Generally no — auto policies cover licensed road vehicles, and off-road or specialty vehicles need standalone coverage. Operating one of these vehicles uninsured exposes you to substantial liability if someone is injured.

Is liability insurance required for trail riding?

Texas doesn't require insurance for off-road use on private property, but most state and federal trail systems do. Even where not required, liability coverage is strongly recommended — a single incident involving another rider can be financially devastating.

Can I insure a vintage or restored RV at its actual value?

Yes. We write agreed-value policies for vintage RVs, classic motorhomes, and restored campers — so a claim pays the documented value rather than depreciated book value.

Does coverage follow the vehicle out of state?

Most policies extend coverage anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. If you're taking a long trip or crossing into Mexico, we add specific endorsements for trip duration.

What if I tow another vehicle behind my motorhome?

We can add coverage for the towed vehicle ("toad") and any damage caused while in tow. Some clients prefer to maintain the toad's own auto policy in addition — we'll model both options.
